What is an Aspire Coil and how does it work?

The coil is almost certainly one of the most important parts of your e cigarette, and its function is to heat the liquid in your tank to create the vapour that you inhale. There is so much to learn when you start out in the world of vaping, from the materials that your coil is made out down to what coil you need to use for your device. In this blog, we are going to look at Aspire coils and how you can use them. You will be able to tell your Aspire Nautilus coils from your Aspire BVC coils in no time! 

What is a coil?

Let’s start with the easy stuff – what is a coil? As you know, the coil is the part of your device that heats up your e liquid. The wicking material (the stuff that you can see inside the coil, normally cotton) absorbs the liquid that you put into your tank. The wire in your coil is then heated up by the battery which causes the liquid to vaporise. As you inhale, the vapour travels through the mouthpiece of your device and into your mouth or lungs. Sounds straightforward right? Well, this is where it can get confusing very quickly!

There is a wide variety of different coils available on the market at the moment simply because the function of your e cigarette changes depending on the coil that you choose to use. You need to choose the right resistance and materials to make sure that you get the best vaping experience possible.

Common materials used in coils include

• Kanthal – this can be used at very high temperatures and have very stable resistance
• NilChrome ( 80% Nickel / 20% Chromium) resistant to high temperatures and heats up very quickly
• Titanium – Constant resistance and a clean, crisp flavour
• Stainless Steel – very versatile and heats up quickly
• Ni200 (nickel, 99%) – changes resistance during heating and gives a very consistent vape

The coil resistance is what dictates a lot of people’s choices when it comes to atomisers:

High resistance coil (above 1.0 ohm)

• Uses less e liquid
• Suitable for most standard vape devices
• Small and discreet cloud production

Low resistance coil (below 10 ohm)

• Larger cloud production
• Uses more e liquid
• Not suitable for all vape devices, normally needs to be used with sub-ohm devices

Whatever coil you choose is purely down to personal preference. Some people want their coils to last a long time without using all their e liquid, whilst others are happy to top up their tanks more frequently and have massive cloud production. Aspire Tigon Coils

Tigon coils are for use with the Aspire Tigon tank, so at least that is easy to remember! These coils range in ohms between 0.5 ohms – 1.2 ohms, so there is a lot of choice. If you use an e liquid with a higher VG (vegetable glycerine) then you are looking for a sub ohm coil (less than 1.0 ohms). The coils with a higher resistance will give you a more intense throat hit and a smoother vape.

Aspire Nautilus Coils

The Nautilus coils can be used in a few of the Aspire devices, including the X30 Rover, the Rover 2, the and the Mulus. The Nautilus X coils have a resistance of 1.5 ohm and are recommended to be used with a resistance of 14-22 watts. The new U Tech technology allows the vapour to flow through the u-shaped chamber and pass through the Kanthal coil twice to ensure that the flavour and throat hit is intense. The Nautilus mini coils use BVC (bottom vertical coil) technology to create massive vapour and a truly intense flavour.

Aspire Cleito Coils

The Cleito coils have been designed to be used exclusively with the Cleito Exo tank and are perfect for those who love the sub-ohm vaping experience. They range from 0.2 ohms, 0.27 ohm and 0.4 ohms and are available with Kanthal wire or mesh. This revolutionary design eliminates the need for a static chimney which means the restriction of airflow is decreased and you have a long-lasting flavour with huge cloud production.

Aspire Proteus Coils

The Aspire Proteus coil uses 0.25 ohm resistance with stainless steel wire and organic cotton, and can be used only with the Proteus device. This is a sub-ohm coil, so expect intense flavour and massive clouds when you purchase these coils!

Aspire BVC Coils

Aspire BVC coils can be used in a wide range of devices, including the Zelos 2 and the Revvo kit. These BVC coils (bottom vertical coil) uses high tech materials and technology to ensure that the taste is purer, and the inhale is crisper.

Aspire AIO

The AIO coil has been designed to be used with the AIO vape device and is perfect for those who want to use nicotine salts. They have a resistance of 1.8 ohms, and while they don’t give you a huge cloud production, they do give you a good nicotine hit and perfect mouth to lung draw.

In order to make sure that you keep your coils in good condition, there are a few steps that you can take to help prolong the lifespan of your Aspire coils:

• Always use the recommended wattage to ensure a satisfying vape and a longer coil life. Your coil may only be suitable for a low wattage, and by turning up the power in your device you risk burning out your coil and developing a nasty taste in your mouth.
• Avoid using your coil straight away and ‘dry hitting’. You need to ensure that your coil is fully primed before you use it, and allow time for the e liquid to fully saturate into the wicking material. This often means using a few drops of liquid inside the coil, and then allowing it to soak for a while before you use it. If you use it too soon, then you could end up burning out the coil before you have even started.
• Keep your tank topped up – this is also to stop the coil from burning out. You need to make sure that there is enough liquid in your tank when you are vaping to avoid dry wicking material
• Try a high PG juice – VG is much thicker than VG, and an e liquid with a high VG content might struggle to soak into the wicking material in your coil. If you find that your coils are burning out quicker than you like, try using a different ratio of liquid.

With the right maintenance, a good coil can last between 1-2 weeks, but there are other factors that you also need to consider. How much you vape, the type of e liquid you are using and your device. If you keep testing different combinations, you are sure to find the right one to suit you.
