What are coils?

First things first for those who are completely new to the vaping scene – what are coils?

The coil is probably the most important part of your e cigarette device, and their function is to heat up your chosen e liquid and turn it into vapour for you to inhale. There are 2 main elements to your coil:

• The wicking material (the cotton inside the coil) – this absorbs the liquid when you fill up your tank to stop your coil from burning out.
• The wire (the little spiral in the middle of your coil) – this is what is heated by your battery in order to create vapour from the e liquid.

Your coil could be made from a few different types of metal depending on how the vape was designed to function. Stainless steel is normally the main element as it is a good heat conductor as well as being heat resistant (so your coil doesn’t burn out as quickly!).

Are all coils the same?

This is where it starts to get a bit complicated! Technically yes, all coils are created with the same design function – however, coils differ between brands and models and there is no one coil that fits all! There are so many to choose from – single coil, dual coil, sub-ohm coil and many more!! It all depends on what brand of vaping device you have and what your vaping preference is as to which coil you choose. Standard coils and sub-ohm coils

As you know, there is a difference in what coils you need to get depending on your device, but there is also a difference in coils depending on how you want your e cigarette to function. Standard coils have a higher resistance so that less e liquid can pass through them and so produce a more discreet vape cloud, whereas sub-ohm coils have a lower resistance to let more current and more e liquid through them – which creates the massive clouds that you sometimes see!

Most brands and devices will offer both of these coils as it is purely personal preference. For example, our Aspire Nautilus coils come in 2 resistances:

• 0.7 ohm – this is the sub-ohm option and is to be used on a device with greater watts to create the large clouds.

How long does a coil last?

There are many different factors that are taken into consideration for how long a coil will last, including frequency of vaping, the e liquid being used and what resistance coil you have. Mostly, you can expect a coil to last 1 – 1.5 weeks if you are a regular vaper.

• Heavy vapers – people who use their e cigarette heavily should be looking at changing their Aspire Nautilus coils or Horizontech Falcon 2 coils (or whichever device you are currently using) once a week. This may seem very extreme but not regularly changing your coil can affect the flavour, cloud production and even battery life of your device.
• Moderate vapers – those who vape throughout the day but only a couple of drags at a time should be looking at changing once every 2 weeks.
• Light vapers – if you don’t use your device constantly throughout the day should expect to be changing their coil once every 3-4 weeks.

How to correctly change a vape coil

Every coil is different, but below is a rough guide on how to change your coil correctly regardless of which device you are using.

1. Make sure the tank is empty of e liquid – you will want to make sure there is no, or very little, e liquid in your tank before you begin.
2. Unscrew the tank from the battery.
3. Pre-soak your new coil – this is called priming or prepping, and you will get a much longer life from your coil if you do this. All you need to do is drop about 5 -10 drops of your e liquid directly onto the cotton. This will make sure your coil does not burn out straight away.
4. Swap the coils – your old coil should easily unscrew from your tank. Keep a towel or some kitchen paper handy to make sure the liquid stays off your hands!
5. Replace the tank and refill – once you’ve put the new coil in, you can screw the tank back on. Then, all you need to do is fill back up with your e liquid and leave to soak for 5 minutes before you can carry on vaping.
